The character of Ratchwood goes on an intricate journey of character development. To realise this character development in full, you will have to read the 4 books, but here I will present a summary of his journey:
We join Ratchwood at point A in his journey, beset with a destructive and addictive personality and encouraging those impulses in Wicklow.
The discovery of a certain superhuman ability leads him to point B, where he sheds some destructive influences, but gains others and is faced with ethical issues around the use of this ability.
At point C in his journey, Ratchwood starts to recognise responsibilities that come with his power. He raises Wicklow from her state of despondency and together they attempt to achieve world peace and salvation through misguided methods.
Identification of himself and his responsibilities leading to uniquely important events, brings Ratchwood to point D, where he attempts to do good while battling his inner demons.
By the time he reaches point E in his timeline, Ratchwood is successfully but temporarily balancing the good and bad influences in his life. External influences on this harmony, brought on by Vygotski, lead Ratchwood to point F where he recognises a significant threat and wants to eliminate it, but is prevented from doing so by the dilemma of whether to saves the world or save his friend.
Point G in the story is the climax and I am not going to reveal its details, save to say it gets very exciting and to encourage you to read the books.
Thanks.
